No Ignatieff!

Liberal leader Ignatieff had a speech in Montreal. Ignatieff said that he supported Affermative action. I hate this idea. I feel that Affirmative action insults who people think it is helping. Affirmative action for (example: women) tells them that the only reason they got the job is because they where born a women. I think they would rather want to get a job because they where the best qualified not because they where born. To quote Martin Luther King "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character." So we should not judge people by there gender in this case, and give them a job because of it. We should judge them by their charector, and that is how they should get the job. I support getting rid of Affirmative action. Because the system works against themselfs we say no one should be treated better yet we allow people to be treated better.

  1. I’m wonder if ever, men got the job because they were born men?

  2. A couple of years ago, my uncle was looking to hire someone for a job in Quebec's ministry of education. By his own admission, he threw away applications from women solely because it'd be inconvenient if they ever got pregnant.

    So, yeah.

I guess if a women gets a job, it can't possibly be because she's qualified. She must have gotten it because affirmative action tipped the odds in her favour. A man doesn't have that kind of advantage, so he has to be much more qualified than a woman doing the same job, right?

  3. My teen daughter and I were out and about last evening in Winnipeg. At a busy corner of the Fringe Festival, an aboriginal male started to cross late, and when the light changed, a mini van lurched forward, honked and yelled obscenities at the man. I said to my daughter, lets cross late at the next light and see what happens. We had been discussing Affirmative Action. Of course, everyone waited, men smiled at my daughter.

If you think the playing field is even to get a job, you're in a dream land, its even wildly skewed just crossing the road. I know how advantaged I am being white and middle class. BUT, I'm not very beautiful, and I have seen better looking, less qualified people than I get hired. I can't imagine what it must be like for those who the rest of society believes they have permission to yell obscenities at when they cross the street.

  4. So your idea is to fix racism with more racism?
What if a white girl goes for a job and cant get it because she's white then goes back and tells her Black husband and her adopted Haiti children that she's still unemployed even though she's pretty sure all those evening's at night school should have paid off. Or, the white man from Pettawawa who has served for 6 years in Afghanastan and is told..um...sorry..your white, this job is for non whites only. Fixing racism wont come from using racist hiring practises. There is no shade of grey in this matter, if you believe in equality then the colour of your skin does not matter, plain, pure and simple.

  5. Affirmative action had a time and place in the evolution of our society. It makes sense that as the lingering effects of past injustice begin to fade that measures such as affirmative action be reassessed and discontinued. This should happen in a measured way; many professions are fully integrated already, but there remain some areas where a transition period will be required.

To anon: please explain how affirmative action will help make it easier for native people to cross the street.
