The End of Liblogs

Yesterday, began a new era in the Canadian political blogosphere with the launch of the Wellington Street Post. This comes as Liblogs will once and for all be closed down, being replaced by the new site. However, this will not be a partisan Liberal aggregate. The Wellington Street Post has pages for Conservatives, NDP and Green as well as pages for non-bloggers involved in politics.

Although I am sad to see the end of Liblogs, I believe that this site will be the best for the blogosphere. By aggregating all the political blogs in one place, this will ensure easier access to a range of views on many issues as well as a possibly enhanced readership. I like the Wellington Street Post and wish it a lot of success.
------------
Dear Libloggers,

In the middle of 2005, Liblogs began as an unofficial list on the sidebar of some Liberal friendly blogs. Since then, it has expanded to a brand with over 200 bloggers, regular readers right across the Canadian political and media spectrum and at least 1,000,000 unique visits. None of this would have been possible without your support and I thank you for all of your hard work on behalf of the cause.

For some time now, I have believed that, for all the good in Liblogs, it can and must be better. We need to take the next step and turn this project into an integral part of the Canadian media landscape. We need more than just political insiders reading – we need to bring the average Canadian news reader to your thoughts and aspirations.

That is why, over a year ago, I decided to turn over control of the organization to Adam Miron. I have known him for some time now and I can assure you that he is smart, capable and understands and supports bloggers. Shortly, he will send you a message that explains his ideas and aspirations for the organization. I have every confidence in Adam and I know you will all appreciate his contribution.

Tomorrow, March 1, 2011, a new site called The Wellington Street Post will launch at http://wellingtonstpost.ca. This site includes blogs of all partisan stripes, media, lobbyists and embassies. The home page is a mixture of all blogs with headlines based on a number of factors, but individual partisan pages remain. Liblogs is staying up a bit longer, but we will soon be redirecting Liblogs traffic to the WSP Liberal page. If you currently have a link to Liblogs, we will be changing the links so that you are a Liberal WSP blogger. By creating one stop for all political blogs, I believe that WSP will increase your readership significantly.

I am also pleased to let you know that I will remain involved in the new organization as Vice-President. Jeff Jedras of “A BCer in Toronto” will also continue in his role on the board of directors, ensuring that every-day bloggers maintain a strong voice in the organization.

It has been a great five years and I cannot adequately express how much I have appreciated your support and understanding.

Yours truly,

Jason Cherniak
