We are going back to the stone age of energy-making. Vancouver is going to start burning its trash to create energy. In our time with our polluted cities, the worst thing we can do is burn garbage. We need to reduce, reuse and recycle all in that order. Maybe we can add compost. Only if it’s impossible to do these four things with an item do we throw it out. Good thing this plan will need consultation with the public. All residents of the Vancouver area, please speak out against this polluting practice. Stop this plan in its tracks and set an example for North America.
Metro Vancouver's waste management committee meets Wednesday to discuss its draft solid waste plan, which will require consultation with the public, the FVRD and its residents, and First Nations before it's submitted to the Environment Minister for final approval.
Committee chairman Greg Moore, the Mayor of Coquitlam, said Metro has to do that consultation before settling on a final solution - which could be anything from a new landfill to an incinerator in the Lower Mainland or one outside the region.
